Leeks

Leeks

(Allium porrum) Cultivated since ancient times in western Asia and Europe, Leeks resemble large spring onions. In cool and temperate climates sow leek seeds from spring to early autumn. Plants are harvested over the cooler months of the year. Ensure that leeks are harvested prior to flowering as the stems will become tough.

Leek seeds may be sown in pots or directly in the garden in a clump to be transplanted 4 weeks later or when leaves are about 20cm tall. Plant out 15cm apart in rows, making sure the planting hole is deep. This helps to blanch the lower portion of the stem and improve its flavour and texture. In warm tropical climates plant leeks over the winter months.
