Collards

(Brassica oleracea var. acephala)

Collards or Collard Greens are Brassica’s which are cultivated as a leaf vegetable and not for a flower head like Broccoli. With a long history of cultivation Collards are very hardy withstanding both extremes of heat and cold. Thought not particularly common here, Collards are popular in the British Isles, Southern United States, Portugal, Brazil and the Kashmir region of India/Pakistan, often as a staple vegetable in the diet. Collards may also be described under various names like Cole, Colewort, Borecole, and even Kale. Sow Collard seeds from spring through to autumn.
