Eggplant

(Solanum melongena) Eggplants are tropical plant originating in India and are related to the tomato and potato. The fruit is in fact a large berry. The Eggplant has been extensively cultivated and incorporated into many traditional cuisines from India and much of East Asia, Turkey and Europe.

The name Eggplant is derived from the various 18th century European cultivars resembling hen and goose eggs. Eggplants require similar growing conditions to Tomatoes, but can be grown as a perennial in warm frost free climates.

Eggplant seeds germinate best between 25-30C and are best started indoors in late winter and planted out after frost in cold climates. Seeds may fail to germinate if temperatures are below 21C, so keep them warm at all times.
