(Lactuca sativa) Celtuce is a non-hearting lettuce relative from southern China grown for its large tender and crisp stalks that are eaten raw in salads or cooked in stir-fry. The young tender leaves are also eaten in the same way. This popular vegetable is commonly found in markets in China. When grown successfully celtuce stems become quite fat and can weigh up to as much as 1kg. Seeds sprout best in cool conditions with spring and autumn sowing recomended for best results.
